On the 3rd October 2025 Commission regulation (EU) 2025/1988 was published which means that no new portable fire extinguishers containing PFAS can be sold after 23 October 2026. Extinguishers containing PFAS that are already in the field, will need to be removed from service before 31 December 2030. Please follow the link below for a copy of the official Commission regulation and also an easier to digest summary, kindly prepared and circulated to the fire trade courtesy of ABC Macintosh Ltd.

The Health and Safety Executive has opened a consultation on proposed restrictions on the use of PFAS in firefighting foams under UK REACH regulations.
This opened on the 18th August 2025 and will close on the 18th February 2026
The HSE states: “This consultation gives interested parties the opportunity to comment on the proposed restriction and the assessments in the Annex 15 report” which contains 242 pages!
The HSE go on to say: “Comments, supported by evidence and relevant information will help inform the next stage of the UK REACH restriction process (the opinion-forming stage). This will help ensure that any regulatory action suggested in the next stage is proportionate, evidence-based and effective”.
